Where Ancient and Modern Combine

Dr. Devinder Mangat, an Ohio plastic surgeon, opened a chain of spas uniting the ancient and the modern, to help his clients relax and find inner peace. The SIA Spa opened in early December 2005, offering the ancient India practice of ayurveda — wellness therapies adopted more than 5,000 years ago that include massage, meditation, yoga, diet, herbs and oils.

This term has become increasingly popular at spas around the country. Previously available mostly at expensive resorts, Dr. Mangat hopes to open a network of such spas. He sees a need for bringing such relaxation techniques into his community and hopes to open other area spas in the next few years. The word ayurveda means the science of life in Sanskrit. The therapies included in ayurveda are all natural and are tailored to a client's "dosha" - a Sanskrit term meaning personal harmony.

As this spa technique grows in popularity, don't be surprised to see it popping up at spas around the country. Some spas offer memberships for people who want to incorporate the ayurveda wellness therapies into their lifestyle.

SIA client Madeline Moxley probably said it best. "A lot of times we look at massages as luxuries, but they really are things that we should be doing for ourselves."
